The settlement permit is a permanent residence permit that allows people from non-EU countries to live and work in Germany on a permanent basis. It offers more security than a temporary residence permit and is not tied to a specific employer or purpose.
Requirements
- You have held a residence permit in accordance with Sections 18a, 18b, 18d, or 18g of the Residence Act (AufenthG) for three years.
- Secured livelihood without social benefits.
- At least 36 months of contributions to the statutory pension insurance scheme or comparable pension benefits.
- You have a job that you are allowed to do with your residence permit.
- Sufficient knowledge of German (usually B1 level).
- No serious criminal offenses or security-related grounds for exclusion.
- Sufficient living space, including for family members
Simplified conditions apply to certain groups, such as highly qualified professionals, holders of an EU Blue Card, graduates of German universities or vocational training in Germany, as well as self-employed persons and recognized refugees.
